Breakaway News Volume No. 21 Issue No. 3 March 2016

March Gladness

Happy Holidays! Yes, we know, it isn’t Christmas or even close, but March is also holiday-laden. They kick off with the wearing of the green for St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th, and then Purim begins on the 23rd and ends on the 24th.  Then we swing right into Good Friday (the 25th) and finally end on Easter on the 27th. Breakaway wishes all our devout followers a happy March holiday season, whatever you celebrate!

Don’t Be Late

Spring is here, and you know what that means: It’s time to set the clocks forward and lose an hour of sleep. Daylight savings time begins on Sunday, March 13th, at 2:00am. That means you’ll have an extra hour of daylight for all those March holidays coming up!

Don’t Be Late, II

No, we’re not repeating ourselves, despite the title of this item. But, as many of our customers are aware, March 15th is the corporate tax deadline. So if you need tax documents shipped really fast between you and your accountant, we have the speedy cyclists for the job.   They’re never late.

 Truck It

Have you got stuff? Do you have big stuff? No, we mean really big stuff that needs to get somewhere, and in a hurry? Well, we’re here for you! We have some big trucks and even lift-gate vehicles ready to tackle whatever you can throw at it. Unless it’s a nuke. Then we don’t want it.

Vintage Whine

Although the cycling season is only just starting, it’s not too early to start thinking of the Tour. Especially when there are already hilarious stories going around.  To wit: French wine makers in the Langeudoc region are threatening to blockade the road when the Tour passes through. Why? Because the Tour this year is being sponsored by – of all things – a Chilean wine. As you might imagine, Gallic pride is on the line.

Super Leap Year

2016 is a leap year, with an extra day added in February. Here at Breakaway, we’ve decided to add it to March, giving it an extra day. Why? Because Super Tuesday is so massive, we figured it could use an extra day. Now you have no excuse! Get out and vote! Somewhere!

Stump the Band

Last month we asked who was the first to calculate the earth’s circumference. Answer: Eratosthenes, using the angles of shadows cast by obelisks at Aswan and Alexandria.

 T-Shirt Question

The Chileans may have the French in a lather over wine, but what grape variety was first cultivated in Chile? The first one to call Gil Ortiz with the correct answer will win a coveted Breakaway T-shirt.

Hearts Afire

You see her. Or him. Your pulse races. Your mouth turns dry. You sweat in uncomfortable spots. But enough about the traffic brownie about to give you a parking ticket. February is here, and that means love is in the air! Be sure to use Breakaway to speed that special Valentine’s Day gift to that special someone on this special day.

Groucho

We at Breakaway get out of the wrong side of bed on occasion. So, what do you do to help that? Solutions that work for us: hydration. Coffee. Hydration then coffee. Crushing our business opponents then some coffee after re-hydrating. Simple, right?

Snowfall Snafu

This latest round of Snowmageddon was quite dramatic, with near-record snowfall. Almost as dramatic is the speed of the post-snowfall melt. Merely a day out from the blizzard and temperatures have been above freezing, even in the forties, melting the snow with unprecedented alacrity. Global warming brings the extreme snow, and then clears it. Global warming bringeth, and then global warming taketh away.

    A Word of Thanks

Speaking of Blizzard 2016, a special thanks to the couriers who came out and gutted it out during the big snow. Our guys are the best, and will get it there no matter the conditions.

 Astronomy Domino

For the first time since 2005, five planets of the solar system will rise at the same time, with the moon sweeping past each of them in turn during its orbit. That’s more fun than watching a presidential debate!

   Uphill Struggle

We’ve been highly amused recently by the recent Twitter spat going on between Neil   deGrasse Tyson and rapper B.o.B. over whether the earth is flat or not. Yes, apparently there are people out there who really believe that. You can tell they were never couriers. No one who ever rode up 10th Ave from 55th to 57th street would ever say that the earth was flat. That’s a seriously steep hill!

Hyper for Shipping

We know that you are very very careful about planning your day, and that comes right down to your deliveries also. You plan your packages and you get them out, but sometimes, there are unforeseen moments. That’s why there’s a Breakaway app fromHyperShip. Our app allows you to set up deliveries while on the go. Just remember; despite the name, HyperShip can’t bring you to into space. Nor does it have phasers.

Stump the Band

Last month we asked which calendar has the least amount of years, i.e. is youngest. Answer: North Korea’s Juche calendar, which is only 104 years old.

 T-Shirt Question

That the earth is round has been known since ancient times but who was the first to calculate the earth’s circumference? The first one to call Gil Ortiz with the correct answer will win a coveted Breakaway T-shirt.

Happy New Year

The holidays are finally over. The year has come to a close. But that also means it’s a new beginning! We want to wish all of our customers a happy, healthy (even if slightly hung over) and prosperous New Year! As always, we’re ready to serve you in 2016 with all your delivery needs.

Defused Enthuse

Now that all the holidays are out of the way, what do you do to generate enthusiasm when you have none? After all, it takes a lot of energy to get geared up during the post-holiday letdown. Our answer: lots of coffee.

Hovering Heights

Retailers are selling them like hot cakes, people are buying them in droves, and legislation says they’re illegal in the city. It’s the hoverboard, the smaller successor to the Segway that failed to revolutionize transport. The hoverboard may deliver where the Segway failed, but first it has to become street legal (legislation on that is already pending) and second it has to not catch on fire (battery issues). Having tried one, we conclude that no one over the age of ten should be on one.

 Drop Out, Drop In

One item that doesn’t have to worry about catching fire is the Pataki campaign; he has officially suspending his bid for the Presidency. Not to worry however. Our former governor is safe to return to his normal stint as one of our on-demand couriers.

Acronym Acrimony

Some people and companies love acronyms. Often useful, some folks take it to an extreme, rendering them unhelpful. Or, as we like to say ATACU: Acronyms That Are Completely Useless.

Warm Winter Wonder

Thank you, El Nino, for a tropically warm, get-out-the-Hawaiian-shirt type Christmas. We always wondered what Christmas would be like in Miami, so thanks for bringing Miami to us. Oh, and thanks for also bringing all the mosquitos, gnats, and fruit flies. It was awesome, really.

Sorting, Sortation

We hold ourselves in high esteem for being fairly erudite and for having a modicum of loquacity for using obscure and recherché participles, parts of vocalizing and of vocabulary. So, imagine our amazement and astonishment when we were confronted with the infinitesimally miniscule chance that a word was unknown to us. “Sortation” is actually a word that we hadn’t heretofore had any truck with, but we are now forced to, as a customer uses it with great repetitiveness. Jeepers.

Stump the Band

Last month we asked which relative of Al Einstein’s also had a PhD. Answer: His sister, Maja Einstein, with PhDs in Romance language and literature.

T-Shirt Question

We in the West use the Gregorian version, but there are many other calendars. Which has the least amount of years? The first one to call Gil Ortiz with the correct answer will win a coveted Breakaway T-shirt.

Breakaway News Volume No. 20 Issue No. 12 December 2015

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays to all of our customers in the Big City and beyond. This year we especially want to remind everyone to stay safe and sound, and to shop with caution. And don’t forget that we can deliver any holiday gift or doo-dad that you want to send.  We might not be faster than reindeer, but we’re pretty quick. Please see the reverse side of this newsletter for some important holiday season shipping information.

Hobnob

Thirty years ago, one of the most important of events in our generation happened; the creation of Calvin and Hobbes. It’s hard to believe that Bill Watterson’s six-year old boy and his tiger sidekick are thirty years old.  With the most dead-on, fall-on-the-floor-laughing commentary on growing up, C&H was a must read for kids of all ages.

More Wit? Get Fit!

We’re long been aware of the link between staying physically active and mental nimbleness. However, recent findings are getting more specific. A new British study shows that of 324 pair of twins, the one with the sturdier legs had less mental drop off entering middle age. One more reason to ride your bicycle! Just ask Albert Einstein, who some say claimed to have dreamed up the theory of relativity while riding his.

 December Driving…

New York only has 7 official gridlock alert days this month (Dec. 2, 4, 11, 16, 17 and 23), but the whole month is likely to be challenging from behind the wheel. You’ll save yourself a lot of headaches and get where you’re going faster by using public transportation, walking or riding your bike.  Better yet, stay off the streets and let us do the pick-ups and deliveries!

More Mobility

Breakaway has a lot of services and, as readers of this newsletter know, we’re not shy about touting them. So you’re probably heard about our mobile app, but here’s a reminder:  download the hyperSHIP app from Google Play or the App Store, enter the code, “bway,” and use your existing online log-in. Now you can call for a Breakaway messenger from wherever you happen to be. It’s waaaayyyyy more productive than Candy Crush.

Life, Continuity, Us

This is now the 20th volume of our illustrious newsletter, and boy does time fly. Einstein had something when he bicycled in on relativity. For instance, if we ride a route for the first time, it seems to take a long time, but after we’re used to it, it goes faster. So, if you rode your bicycle across country, every day would be different. Each day could be an eternity. And every minute would be an eternity if you were listening to a Justin Bieber record.

Stump the Band

Last month we asked what Cuban government vehicles are legally required to do while on the open road. Answer:  pick up hitchhikers.

T-Shirt Question

Intelligence is relative; what relative of Einstein also had a PhD? The first one to call Gil Ortiz with the correct answer will win a coveted Breakaway T-shirt.

Tips for Faster Deliveries During the Holiday Season

Our delivery volume will spike dramatically during the holiday season, and you may experience delays, particularly during peak periods.  Here are some tips to avoid service delays:

1) Place large orders in the early morning, preferably before 9:00 AM. We are open 24 hours a day.  Our peak periods are from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. If we are extremely busy, pickup times can slow down. Trucking deliveries are generally slower because of traffic delays and security checks.

2) If you are planning a large batch of gift deliveries, it helps to have one-day advance notice. For any delivery project with 10 or more addresses, you can just email us a spreadsheet and we’ll upload it directly into our system. Send the email to manyorders@breakawaycourier.com, and get more information at http://breakawaycourier.com/bulk-deliveries.

3) Label your packages completely.  Packages that are not completely labeled languish in the company mailroom.  Always include the recipient's full name, company name, room number, address and phone number. With post-9/11 security, many office buildings will not accept packages without complete information on delivery labels. Also include your return address on the package.

4) Call ahead to the delivery point to make sure someone is there to receive your package. If you order an evening delivery, make sure the receiving party is open past 5:00 PM. It might make more sense to schedule the delivery for the following morning.

5) Do not procrastinate! Please do not wait until the last minute. Many people leave several days early, and some offices close for the entire week of Christmas, so it’s best to complete deliveries by Friday, December 18.

6) Please circulate this flyer to all employees who will be using Breakaway’s services during the holiday season.

Enjoy the holidays!

Breakaway News Volume No. 20 Issue No. 11 November 2015

Gobble Gobble!

Well, we’ve all survived the ghosts, ghouls, and goblins. But can we survive … the food?!!! Yes, it’s Thanksgiving this month, or as we like to call it, “Gut-Busting Season,” as we, and everyone around us, scarfs down enough calories to feed an army. We have a solution though: Cranksgiving! At this annual event, folks can ride their bicycles while buying food for the needy, enabling us to burn off enough calories to justify the oncoming tryptophan stupor. Just don’t ask us to move the next day.

ComicCon Gone

It wasn’t even Halloween, but we were recently treated to the most amazing costume display short of a Hollywood historical epic. ComicCon was at the Javits center, and the streets around our office were full of people dressed in the most creative, goofy, outlandish garb possible. Thanks ComicCon! It was fun while it lasted, but it’s good be to back to basic, drab, sartorial black.

Fleet on the Street

Our customers know we have long had trucking services and logistic services. But, did you know that we also outsource fleet services? For when you need more than one vehicle to do the job, we can work with you with to coordinate multiple deliveries in the Metropolitan area or even between states. Contact our fleet/trucking services to see how fleet outsourcing can best serve your logistic needs.

Smoking a Havana

Breakaway Office Pundit AY recently went on vacation. That’s not unusual, but the destination was; he went to Cuba. He had an awesome time, except now he’s filling the office with cigar smoke. Hard to see the dispatch screen through the haze!

Holiday Deliveries

Once the calorie-fest is complete, we turn our attention to another traditional holiday activity: shopping!  Consume, consume, consume! Get out there and buy! It’s good for the economy! You’ll grow three more inches! Happiness will be yours! And Breakaway will be there to help deliver all your purchases. Large or small, remember to call us when you have to ship the happiness item after it has been consumed…er…purchased.

 Happy Days

We all know that November brings Thanksgiving, Veteran’s Day and Election Day.  But did you know that November 2nd is Fill our Staplers Day?  The 14th brings National Pickle Day, and more deliciousness arrives on the 20th with National Peanut Butter Fudge DayWorld Kindness Day on the 13th may be overshadowed on the 19th with Have a Bad Day Day, but we can close out the month with a smile by celebrating Stay Home Because You’re Well Day on the 30th.

Stump the Band

Last month we asked when and where the city’s first bicycle lane opened. Answer: The first dedicated bicycle lane in the U.S. was built back in 1894 on Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn.

 T-Shirt Question

What are the Cuban government’s vehicles legally required to do while on the open road? The first one to call Gil Ortiz with the correct answer will win a coveted Breakaway T-shirt.

Breakaway News Volume No. 19 Issue No. 10 October 2015

All Hallows

It’s that time of year, when ghastly pint-sized ghouls and goblins come knocking at your door, looking for some scary, tasty morsels to rot their teeth. That means, of course, that you’ll need lots of sweets on hand! We wish all of our customers a safe and happy Halloween, and remember; we can deliver your bags of sugar rush right to your door.

Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah

With the recent talk of an aerial gondola connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan, we got to thinking:  maybe getting from place to place via skyway is not such a fanciful idea.  What about ziplines between buildings?  You could start out in midtown and zip your way from the Empire State Building right on down to Wall Street faster than a Breakaway messenger!

 High Life Line

Breakaway customer Friends of the High Line, and the rest of the city, have reason to celebrate: the third, and final, phase of the High Line is complete! The High Line elevated park’s northern terminus is now at 34th street, across the street from the Javits Center. It’s also the only non-elevated entry into the park. It’s great for us; our offices are right near there. Join us there for lunch?

T-Shirt Hunt

Breakaway couriers are required to wear our logoed t-shirts, jackets and other gear, but occasionally we catch one or two of them out of uniform. If you spot one of our couriers with Breakaway gear, give us a call. If the messenger was indeed out of uniform, you’ll win a coveted Breakaway T-shirt of your own!

Leaf Peeping

The air is turning crisper and cooler, and that means that fall has arrived. It also means that trees all throughout the northeast are going to start the landscape into a canvas of fiery colors. Get out there and ogle the falling leaves. We fully intend to.

Logical Logistics

Recently, our logistics and trucking department helped many customers through their Fashion Week challenges.  For example: six customers needed help with setting up at the Javits Center over one weekend, and we had six vans waiting there for them to provide all the logistical support needed for them to have successful showings. Call our logistics department and find out what we can make easy for you?

Stump the Band

Last month, we asked what the biblical names of Rosh Hashanah are. Answer: Day of Remembrance or the Day of the Sounding of the Shofar (Ram’s Horn).

T-Shirt Question

Today it’s a beautiful park but what entity was the former owner of what is now the High Line Park? The first one to call Gil Ortiz with the correct answer will win a coveted Breakaway T-shirt.

Breakaway News Volume 20 Issue No. 9 September 2015

Labor Party

Happy Labor Day weekend! We wish all our – and everyone else’s – workers a good weekend, and a well deserved feet up. This year, Labor Day is a little late, since the first Monday of the month falls on the 7th. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying your barbecue! Just be sure to use Breakaway to deliver all the burgers, dogs, and buns required!

Topless in Times Sq.

As messengers in the big city, we thought we’d seen it all. Well, now we really have. The “desnudas”- Times Square topless ladies - have certainly stirred the political pot with a whole bunch of pols vying to be more outraged about it than the last one. Relax, everyone. Come winter, we’re sure there’ll be nothing to see.

 Last Mile in Style

What is the Last Mile? It’s that last push to get something to its ultimate destination after it’s travelled from a long distance. An item may have been shipped from Australia to Parsippany, but if it doesn’t get to your office or home, it might as well never have been shipped at all. We specialize in all sorts of Last Mile services, big or small, a little or a lot. Call us to learn more.

 Traffic Time

We all know that sitting in traffic is a giant pain in the you-know-what, but a recently released study figured out just how bad it is for New York area drivers.  According to the study, we spent an estimated 74 extra hours in the car due to traffic in 2014 – more than 3 days.  Time that could have been better spent driving from NY to San Francisco; completing the coursework for a pilot’s license; or watching 148 episodes of Seinfeld.  Of course, our guys slip right through traffic, making using a Breakaway courier the smart choice.

 Fashionably Prompt

This year, New York Fashion week moves out of the tents at Lincoln Center to two new venues: The Skylight at the Moynihan Station Post Office, and the Skylight in Clarkson Square. So, if you have an important fashionista delivery, remember to double-check the address, and don’t forget that while Breakaway couriers are always fashionably clad, they are never fashionably late.

Ole! Ole!

We’ve scarcely had the chance to calm down from the Tour de France, and now it’s time for another Grand Tour. Actually, it’s the last Grand Tour of the season, the Vuelta a España. It’s one last chance for bicycle racers to snag glory in another long grueling tour. Who will win? After the Tour, who will care?

Stump the Band

Last month we asked what the month of August was originally called. Answer: The month used to be called Sextillis, as the sixth month in the original ten-month Roman calendar. It was renamed in honor of Rome’s first emperor, Octavian Caesar Augustus.

T-Shirt Question

Jimi Hendrix’s “Hey Joe,” was recorded in England. What was the name of the song’s female chorus? The first one to call Gil Ortiz with the correct answer will win a coveted Breakaway T-shirt.

Breakaway News Volume 20 Issue No. 8 August 2015

Permanent Press

Does your company do mass press distributions? Are you the one putting together the swag bags that need to be send out all over the city?  We can help!  For any delivery of more than 10 stops, just e-mail us a spreadsheet and we’ll take care of the rest. Learn more at breakawaycourier.com/bulk-deliveries/ We can even help stuff the goody bags!

Feelin’ Hot, Hot, Hot

They call them the Dog Days of summer, originally because of the sunrise appearance of Sirius, the Dog Star. Now they’re just the hottest time of year, when many flee to the beach and we all move just a little more slowly. Except, of course, for our ever-so-speedy Breakaway messengers.  So if you’re stuck in the office on a summer Friday afternoon and need a package delivered ASAP, we’ve got you covered.

Bike Hike - We Like

Citi Bike has announced that August 10th will be the date for its long-awaited expansion. Williamsburg,   Greenpoint and Long Island City will get 91 docking stations this summer, finally bringing bike sharing to the outer boroughs. Next up is a more ambitious, and perhaps contentious, expansion into the Upper West and East Sides. Stay tuned.

  Super Duper Rush

We knew he was fast, but we didn’t know he was that fast! Messenger T1000, who went by the name New Horizons, heard that NASA wanted to fly by Pluto. So, he convinced them to give us the job, and he jumped on his ride and took off. Literally! He’s currently speeding by Pluto at 30,000 mph. We crunched the numbers, and that means that when he gets back, he can deliver from midtown to Wall Street in 0.5 seconds. Speedy!

Chris Vroooom!!

Cheerio and pip pip and all that! I know, we said that last month, but we get to say it again to congratulate Chris Froome of Great Britain, the winner of the 2015 Tour de France. This is his second Tour victory.  For those counting, the Brits have now won three of the last four Tours de France. Rule Britannia!

 Elevator Talk

“Oh, did you see that fight on Twitter between Ashley and Chloe?! Wasn’t that ridiculous?!” #likegagmewithaspoon.
Just another one of the titillating conversations overheard by our messengers every day.

Stump the Band

Last month we asked what celestial phenomena was seen July 4th. Answer: Perhaps the ultimate in fireworks, SN 1054, a supernova, was recorded by Chinese and Arabic astronomers on July 4 in the year 1054. Its remnant forms the Crab Nebula.

 T-Shirt Question

The dog days of summer occur during August, as do meteor showers. What was the month originally called? The first one to call Gil Ortiz with the correct answer will win a coveted Breakaway T-shirt.

Breakaway News Volume No. 20 Issue No. 7 July 2015

Happy Fourth!
Happy Independence Day to all of our customers! It was on July 4 that the Declaration of Independence was formally adopted by the Second Continental Congress.  It also means fireworks and barbecues! If you need fix in’s for the Fourth, be sure to call us and please, enjoy the holiday safely and responsibly.

 Bulk Force
Does your company move a lot of items? Are you a wiz at Excel? Do you hate sending one item at a time? We have the perfect solution – bulk delivery! For deliveries with at least 10 stops, you can put all of your information on a spreadsheet and e-mail it to us. You can even download a template from our website breakawaycourier.com/bulk-deliveries/

Ride, King James!
We know LeBron James jams and rules on the hardwood, but did you know that he partly attributes that to his bicycle? King James apparently rides to his Cavaliers home games and practices, claiming that it helps him stay in top physical condition.  No wonder he’s such a champ – he’s a biker!

 The Real Tour
It’s July, and that means it’s time for 3 weeks of televised cycling: the Tour de France! Contador may try and continue his dominance, but may not be able to with a competitive field. Can an American win it again? Stay tuned!

On Demand
Have papers to file? Groceries that need to get delivered? A finicky cat that needs company? Just call us and ask for a messenger-on-demand. Our courier can be your guy/gal Friday any day of the week. Call for details.

England Edition
Cheerio and pip pip and all that! This edition of the newsletter is being crafted over in jolly old England, as we are on vacation this week.  We find it quite salubrious indeed to write the newsletter while having a pint in the pub! Now, off to have a spot of tea and catch up on the cricket.

(Waiting) On The 7…
We’ve been waiting and waiting, and it’s been pushed back and pushed back, but it looks like the 7 subway line extension is finally going to happen. Originally scheduled to launch in June 2014, the elusive beast seemed doomed to suffer the fate of the fabled 2nd Avenue subway (in the works since 1929). The official start is now slated for October 2015, with a stop just steps away from Breakaway World Headquarters.

Stump the Band
Last month we asked what a “nail house” was. Answer: A “nail house” is a lone home that is holding out against a larger development. The term originated in China.

T-Shirt Question

It happened on July 4th, was seen worldwide, and it created a celestial phenomena. What  was it? The first one to call Gil Ortiz with the correct answer will win a coveted Breakaway T- shirt.

Breakaway News Volume No. 20 Issue No. 6 June 2015

Happy Father’s Day
Last month, it was your mom, but it took two people to bring you into this world, and now it’s the other party’s turn. This June 21st, we want to wish all Dads out there a wonderful, relaxed Father’s Day. Planning a barbecue? Call us and we’ll help deliver the fixin’s!

Toothy
Another of those, “They can send a man to the moon…” type stories. This one a bit closer to home! While having lunch before writing this newsletter, our filling fell out. They can send a man to the moon, but can’t make a filling that lasts?! Get us some crazy glue, stat.

 Expanding Citi
The CitiBike program has become a big success. Lots of people have availed themselves of the Citi bikes to travel short distances. Now, Citi Bike is expanding into the Upper West Side, and will be bringing 39 new docking stations to areas from west 63rd street to 107th street. Details still need to be ironed out, but we look forward to more people discovering the joy of cycling through Citi Bike.

 The Other Tour
Congratulations to Alberto Contador, the winner of last month’s Giro d’Italia, the other grand   tour race aside from the Tour de France. Contador held on to win in the last days in    convincing fashion, and now has sights set on the other-other Tour.

On Demand
Have papers to file? Groceries that need to get delivered? A finicky cat that needs sitting? You can call us and ask for a messenger-on-demand. Our courier can be your guy/gal Friday for the day or the week. Call for details.

 Cooool Trucking
It’s been an open secret for some time now that we have vans and trucks available for the big jobs. But did you know that we also have refrigerator trucks? If you have perishables that need to get somewhere while keeping their cool, give us a call and we’ll provide the chilliest of rides.

Work Force
A new British study found that the average office worker spends 36 days per year answering e-mails, not all of which are job related. It also found that a great deal of time at the office was spent doing trivial things, rather than actually working. Not our couriers, though. You can be sure that our guys are working hard to get your items delivered on time.

 Stump the Band
Last month we asked what the toppings on a Margherita pizza signify. Answer: The toppings  reflect the colors of the Italian flag: green, white, and red.

 T-Shirt Question
What is a “nail house?” The first one to call Gil Ortiz with the correct answer will win a  coveted Breakaway T-shirt.
